The Ultimate Changshou Lake Fireworks Show Guide for Foreign Travelers

If you search for “Chongqing fireworks,” you might find generic city displays or crowded festivals. But as the founder of DolphinUnion, having helped over 1,000 foreign travelers plan their China trips, I know the real magic happens at Changshou Lake (Changshou Hu).

Last year, a traveler from Japan named Hiroshi wanted to see a spectacular fireworks show but hated the idea of being crushed in a crowd. He asked me for a “unique experience” that wasn’t too chaotic. I sent him to Changshou Lake. He watched the fireworks reflect on the water from a quiet island and told me it was the most romantic night of his trip.

This guide is for you if you want the ultimate Changshou Lake fireworks show guide for foreign travelers. It covers everything from VIP seats to hidden free spots, ensuring you have a memorable night without the stress.

🎆 The Official Show: Sky Theater (Tiankong Juchang)

Many tourists worry that the “official” spot is the only safe option. Here is the truth: The Sky Theater (Tiankong Juchang) offers the best direct view, but it comes with a high price tag and massive crowds.

  • The Vibe: It is right in front of the stage. The VIP zone has the clearest view, but tickets are expensive. The lawn tickets are cheaper but require you to arrive hours early to find a spot.
  • The Cost: Lawn tickets are around ¥168, while VIP seats can go up to ¥368.
  • My Advice: If you choose this, be prepared to fight for space. It is lively but can be exhausting.

The Relaxed Choice: Swan Castle Hotel (Tian’e Bao Jiudian)

If you hate standing in the cold, this is your best bet. The Swan Castle Hotel (Tian’e Bao Jiudian) sits on a hill directly facing the stage.

  • The View: You can watch the fireworks from the hotel terrace or your lake-view room balcony. No crowds, just comfort.
  • The Cost: Rooms start from ¥500+.
  • Pro Tip: Book a room with a balcony well in advance. It is worth the extra money to sip wine while watching the show.

The Immersive Experience: Xixi Island (Xixi Dao)

For those who want to be close to the action, Xixi Island (Xixi Dao) is behind the stage. You are right next to the fireworks.

  • The Experience: You can watch the “firework rain” from the shore. It is very intense and atmospheric.
  • The Catch: The hotels on the island are pricey (over ¥800), and the smoke can be heavy.
  • How to get there: You need to take a boat from the Changshou Lake Resort Hotel (Changshou Hu Dujiari Jiudian).

My Top Pick: Anshun Island (Anshun Dao)

This is where I would go. Anshun Island (Anshun Dao) offers a panoramic view of the lake and the fireworks reflection. It feels like a Japanese firework festival!

  • The Spot: I stayed at Jinhu Villa (Jinhu Shanzhuang). The view from their terrace is perfectly aligned with the show.
  • The Cost: It is very affordable. A stay with three meals is great value. If you just want to watch, it is even cheaper.
  • Navigation: Drive to Wusi Wharf (Wusi Matou). Parking is about ¥10-15. You must contact the farm stay (Nongjiale) in advance to arrange a boat ride to the island.

The Free Option: Rentou Mountain (Rentou Shan)

If you are on a budget, Rentou Mountain (Rentou Shan) is a high point you can drive to.

  • The View: You get a high-angle, wide shot of the entire lake.
  • The Downside: It gets very crowded. You need to arrive early to grab a spot.
  • The Price: Free!

Paddle Boarding & Water Views

Want to be on the water? You can launch paddle boards or kayaks from Rentou MountainWusi WharfAnshun Island, or Xixi Island.

  • Rules: Launching is free at Rentou Mountain and Wusi Wharf. For the islands, ask the hotel.
  • Safety: Do not go to the middle of the lake. Stick close to the island. Wear a life jacket.
  • Timing: You must be in the water before 18:00. The police close the shore after 6 PM.

Show Times & Logistics

The fireworks happen every Saturday night starting from July 2026.

  • Time: Starts sharp at 20:30.
  • Duration: Fireworks pop for 5-6 rounds, ending around 21:30.
  • Don’t leave early! The second half is the most stunning.

How to get there:

Take the high-speed train from Chongqing North Station (Chongqing Bei Zhan) to Changshou Lake Station (Changshou Hu Zhan). It takes 20-30 minutes and costs about ¥40. From the station, take a shuttle bus or a taxi (approx. ¥30) to the Sky Theater (Tiankong Juchang).

The Return Trip Challenge:

The show ends at 21:30. The last train back to Chongqing from Changshou Lake Station is usually gone. The last train from Changshou North Station (Changshou Bei Zhan) leaves at 22:32.

The station is 25km away (a 40-minute drive). Traffic will be heavy.

My Solution:

  1. Stay overnight: Enjoy more of Changshou. Read another blog of Changshou.
  2. Rush: Leave 10 minutes early and book a Didi (Chinese Uber) in advance.
